Mexico, U.S. Set Friday Talks on Border Security, Fentanyl Crisis

(MENAFN) Mexico is preparing to engage the United States in high-stakes bilateral discussions this week, covering some of the most pressing flashpoints in the two nations' relationship — border security, law enforcement cooperation, and migration — Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco announced Tuesday.

Security working groups from both countries are scheduled to convene Friday in Mexico City, where officials will push to advance joint efforts on border enforcement, the fight against fentanyl trafficking, and the disruption of illicit financial networks, Velasco told reporters at a daily press conference.

Rubio–Velasco Call Sets Stage for Face-to-Face Summit
The announcement follows a phone call Monday between Velasco and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which the two diplomats worked to coordinate an in-person meeting aimed at deepening dialogue on critical bilateral matters. Among the key items on the agenda is the future of the United States-Canada-Mexico Agreement, a trade framework whose renegotiation carries significant economic stakes for all three nations.

Months of Diplomacy Build Toward This Week's Meeting
Tuesday's announcement is the latest development in an intensifying diplomatic exchange between the two neighbors. Over recent months, Mexico and the United States have convened multiple rounds of talks centered on border security, migration management, and coordinated action against fentanyl trafficking — issues that have consistently dominated the bilateral agenda and show no signs of fading from the forefront of relations between Washington and Mexico City.
