Mexico City World Cup Kickoff Set Against Ongoing Protests

(MENAFN) According to reports, the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match in Mexico City is expected to take place amid ongoing demonstrations in the capital.

Various groups have taken to the streets in recent days, using the global sporting event as a platform to raise long-standing social and political demands. Many of the demonstrators are affiliated with the National Educational Workers Coordination (CNTE), who have set up tents in the historic center of Mexico City and are maintaining a continuous presence in the area.

Protesters include teachers calling for higher wages, education reforms, and pension improvements, as well as groups representing families searching for missing relatives, including those linked to the 2014 disappearance of trainee teachers in Ayotzinapa. Other participants include retired judicial workers, farmers, and animal rights activists.

The demonstrations have led to partial closures in parts of the city’s historic district, with authorities installing barriers in some areas to limit access. At times, confrontations between protesters and police have been reported.

Major roads such as Paseo de la Reforma and Insurgentes, along with streets in the historic center, have experienced intermittent blockages, contributing to traffic congestion and disruptions in public transport across central Mexico City.

Despite the unrest, preparations continue for the World Cup opening, with authorities managing security and logistical arrangements ahead of the international event.
