Mexico Considers Action After Reported CIA Role in Drug Raid
Speaking during her daily briefing, Sheinbaum stated that “there cannot be agents from any US government institution operating in the Mexican field,” according to reports, adding that such activity would fall outside existing bilateral security arrangements.
She also confirmed that Mexico has sent a diplomatic note to the United States after an incident in which two US officials and two Mexican investigators were killed in a vehicle crash linked to an operation targeting illegal drug laboratories near the US border.
The CIA’s reported involvement in the raid was confirmed by a US official and individuals familiar with the matter, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the issue.
Sheinbaum said that while the Mexican military participated in the operation, federal authorities had not been informed of any US presence on the ground. She rejected interpretations linking the event to broader policy shifts under US President Donald Trump, who has advocated stronger action against drug cartels, calling such intervention unnecessary.
Mexico’s Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch later stated that while intelligence-sharing with the United States continues, foreign agents have not operated alongside Mexican forces in the field.
Sheinbaum added that she has requested a full explanation from the US ambassador and plans to hold discussions with Chihuahua Governor Maria Eugenia Campos regarding the incident.
